Hunterdon County Commissioners recognize Mane Stream equine program for excellence in therapeutic services

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – The Hunterdon County Commissioner Board recently recognized staff from Mane Stream (MS), an equine-assisted service facility for individuals with special needs who benefit from therapeutic horsemanship.

Established in 1972, Mane Stream stands as the second oldest equine-assisted service program in the nation and is recognized as a Premier Accredited Center of PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International).

On behalf of the entire Board, Commissioner Director John Lanza presented a proclamation to Karen Mikita-Kaufhold, President of the MS Board of Directors, and Trish Hegeman, Executive Director of MS, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community and shared, “My colleagues and I appreciate your leadership and dedication to providing therapeutic horsemanship in our community. There is no doubt that this program serves as a beacon of hope  and support for many individuals with special needs and their families, providing equine-assisted activities and therapies that make a difference in their lives.”

Mane Stream has grown considerably from its early beginnings – originally comprised of three horses and six riders and formally called the ‘Somerset Hills Handicapped Riders Club’. The program was renamed “Mane Stream” in 2012, and continues serving hundreds of individuals annually, providing life-changing experiences through adaptive riding, driving, equine-assisted occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and other services.

The dedicated staff, board members, and service partners create a welcoming and supportive environment for participants of all ages, from children as young as two years old to adults in their eighties, helping them develop confidence, independence and strength through their interactions with horses.

Mane Stream relies on the generosity and dedication of its 150+ active volunteers, who collectively contribute approximately 10,000 hours of service each year. Their time, skill, and commitment make it possible to ensure that every participant receives the support they need to thrive.
