Hunterdon County Commissioners support Heart Health Month with a ‘Lunch & Learn’ event for county staff

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – In recognition of February as Heart Health Month, the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners held a “Healthy Heart Lunch & Learn” event for staff on Tuesday, February 25.

The event featured a presentation titled “Stay Young At Heart” by registered dietitians Elisa England, MS RDN, and Ellen Petrosino, MS, RDN, from the Nourish and Thrive Nutrition Center. Attendees were educated on heart health, preventative measures, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The event also offered free blood pressure screenings provided by Public Health Nursing staff, alongside a light lunch.

Deputy Director and Health Department liaison, Shaun C. Van Doren, emphasized the importance of heart health for overall wellbeing. “Heart health is a vital aspect of overall health, and it is important we take proactive steps to educate and support our employees in maintaining a healthy heart,” he said. “Promoting wellness within our community benefits both individuals and helps reduce healthcare costs related to chronic diseases.”

Hunterdon County Department of Health Director Karen DeMarco highlighted the importance of heart disease awareness. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., accounting for one in four deaths each year,” she stated. “During Heart Health Month, I encourage everyone to speak with their physician about their risk factors for heart disease and take advantage of the free screenings offered by our department.”

The Health Department routinely provides blood pressure and biometric screenings at community events and offers year-round education on heart health, including tips on nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction.
