Hunterdon County continues utilizing innovative slurry seal to extend roadway life

“Application Recently Used On County Route 579 In Franklin Township”

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Hunterdon County Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl along with Deputy Director Susan Soloway and Commissioner John Lanza joined the Director of Sales and Marketing for Asphalt Paving Systems, Walter Percy, last week for an on-site demonstration to observe the application of Slurry Seal, an industrial grade asphalt surfacing product.

The demonstration took place along County Route 579/Croton Road, in Franklin Township.

The Hunterdon County Commissioners on Aug. 20 passed a resolution approving the Slurry Seal – Pavement Surface Treatment for County Route 579/Croton Road from, State Route 12 to county Route 616, in the Townships of Delaware, Raritan and Franklin.

“It is great to see first-hand the application of slurry seal, and its use in pavement preservation. Slurry seal is known for its ability to extend the life of pavement by several years and was chosen for its efficiency and minimal disruption to traffic. This method not only enhances the road’s durability but also provides a more sustainable and fiscally responsible solution compared to traditional resurfacing techniques,” Kuhl said.

Slurry seal is an industrial-grade asphalt surfacing product, with principal materials and fillers that are combined with water for easy application. Some of the advantages of slurry sealing include, its low cost, its ability to both correct existing problems and prevent future problems, and its quick drying ability; all benefits that add to the aesthetic value of existing pavement appearance and the product’s durability.

Pavement preservation is another tool to assist the Board in keeping county roadways among the best in the State of New Jersey. Slurry seal extends the life of existing roadways in both a fiscally and environmentally responsible manner and is being utilized by several counties throughout the state to extend the useful life of existing infrastructure.

“Slurry seal is a quick, thorough, and economically efficient means to extend the useful life of an existing roadway, with less disruption for motorists. By investing in modern and efficient road maintenance techniques, the county aims to address roadway improvements based upon the best recommended approach in the most economically viable manner,” Soloway said.
