READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County celebrated health, fitness, and inclusion at the inaugural “Healthy Hunterdon Fest” on Saturday, May 17, at Deer Path Park, highlighted by the dedication of the county’s new Barrier-Free Fitness Pavilion.
The event, aimed at promoting wellness and community connection, featured a full day of fitness activities, wellness education, and family fun. A focal point was the unveiling of the pavilion, a project aimed at expanding accessibility throughout the county’s parks and open space.
“This new facility represents another important step forward by the Board of Commissioners in expanding ADA access throughout our parks and open space,” said Commissioner Director John Lanza, who was joined at the event by Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren, Commissioners Susan Soloway and Zach Rich, and County Prosecutor Renée Robeson.
“From the nearly $2 million barrier-free playground we proudly opened at Deer Path Park in July 2023, to the pavilion we dedicate today, our mission has been clear — to ensure that every resident can enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation, regardless of physical ability,” Lanza added.
The festival also welcomed special guests Otis Anderson, former New York Giants running back, and Eric LeGrand, a former Rutgers University football player and advocate for adaptive sports following a spinal cord injury. Both highlighted the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces.
Throughout the day, attendees participated in fitness sessions including Total Body workouts, Pilates, yoga, and self-defense classes led by certified instructors. The park also hosted laser tag, a mini-ninja zone, obstacle courses, aquatic safety demonstrations, and more.
Local organizations such as Hunterdon Healthcare, America’s Grow-a-Row, and Hope One were present to support the day’s theme of wellness for all.
“I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who helped bring this event — and this facility — to life,” Lanza said. “Special recognition goes to the Division of Building and Maintenance, the Division of Parks and Recreation, the Health Department, and our community partners at the River Crossing YMCA. Your dedication and teamwork made today possible.”
