Hunterdon County earns tenth consecutive clean audit, marking decade of fiscal excellence

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County has achieved a decade of financial excellence, receiving a clean, unqualified audit report for the tenth consecutive year, officials announced.

The milestone was celebrated at the Sept. 16, 2025, meeting of the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners following the filing of the 2024 Annual Report of Audit by independent auditors Suplee, Clooney & Company.

“Receiving a clean audit for ten years in a row is not just a financial accomplishment — it’s a governance achievement,” said Commissioner Director John Lanza. “Year after year, the independent auditor confirms what we already know: Hunterdon County runs a tight financial ship. This milestone reflects the deep commitment of this Board and our staff to fiscal discipline and respect for the taxpayer.”

Deputy Director Shaun C. Van Doren credited the consistency and accountability of the county’s financial leadership for the achievement.

“A decade of clean audits is the result of consistent and responsible financial management,” Van Doren said. “Our Board, along with CFO Andrew Bernath and his finance team, continues to demonstrate that Hunterdon County can operate effectively, deliver quality services, maintain zero county debt since 2014, and do so with the highest level of accountability.”

The 2024 audit was submitted to the Clerk of the Board and reviewed by all members of the governing body. The resolution passed on Sept. 16 affirms compliance with all state auditing and reporting regulations, including the timely submission of documentation to the Local Finance Board.

Hunterdon County’s fiscal strategy has also yielded tax relief for residents, with the county tax rate reduced in both 2024 and 2025 following a five-year tax freeze from 2018 to 2023.

Commissioner Zach Rich expressed gratitude to County CFO Andrew Bernath and the finance department for their diligence and professionalism.

The Board extended its appreciation to Bernath, department heads, and staff in payroll, purchasing, finance, and budgeting, as well as to Suplee, Clooney & Company for their independent verification of the county’s financial integrity.
