Hunterdon County man accused of breaking into car, using stolen credit and debit cards arrested

BRANCHBURG TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – A Hunterdon County man has been arrested in connection with a motor vehicle burglary in Branchburg Township, according to Branchburg Township Police Chief Richard Buck.

On Monday, February 17, a township resident reported that their parked, unoccupied motor vehicle had been burglarized outside their residence sometime during the early morning hours, shortly after 3:00 a.m., Buck said.

The victim reported that several items, including various debit and credit cards, were stolen from inside the vehicle. Further investigation by Branchburg Police Detectives revealed that the suspect had used the victim’s credit and debit cards at several nearby locations after the burglary occurred, Buck said.

On Thursday, February 20, through investigative efforts, Branchburg PD Detectives positively identified Christopher J. Camargo, 32, of Ringoes, NJ, as the primary suspect. It was confirmed that he was staying at a motel in Branchburg Township, Buck said.

Branchburg Police Detectives then obtained a Somerset County Superior Court-ordered search warrant for Camargo’s motel room. When officers attempted to make contact with Camargo, he fled the scene but retreated back into his room. He was later found attempting to conceal himself in a storage area of the motel room and was taken into custody without further incident. Proceeds from the motor vehicle burglary, along with other items related to criminal activity, were recovered from the room, Buck said.

Camargo has been charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree theft by unlawful taking, third-degree receiving stolen property, third-degree possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, hindering apprehension, and obstructing the administration of law. He is currently lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, Buck said.
