Man sentenced to 40 years in prison on anniversary of fatal drunk driving crash in Warren County

BELVIDERE, N.J. (Warren County) — A Washington man was sentenced Friday to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison on the fourth anniversary of a drunk driving crash that killed one man and seriously injured another woman, authorities said.

John C. Nunn, 32, was sentenced Feb. 6 in Warren County Superior Court after being convicted in connection with a 2022 crash that claimed the life of Tyler Balog and caused severe, life-altering injuries to Kimberlie Terry.

Superior Court Judge H. Matthew Curry imposed the maximum sentence allowed under state law, sentencing Nunn to 30 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter and 10 years for aggravated assault. The sentences are to be served consecutively. Under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act, Nunn must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. His remaining charges were merged, and his driving privileges in New Jersey were revoked for life.

“This sentence sends a clear message: drinking and driving with reckless disregard for human life will not be tolerated here in Warren County,” Prosecutor Jessica Cardone said. “Our office, together with law enforcement partners, will investigate and prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law. We thank the first responders who acted quickly and professionally in the aftermath. The families in this case will continue to live with the consequences of this tragedy every day. We stand with the victims, their families, and first responders as they continue to face the lasting impact of this case.”

A Warren County jury found Nunn guilty on Dec. 12, 2025, of aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, aggravated assault and two counts of assault by auto.

The charges stem from a crash that occurred Feb. 6, 2022, when Washington Township police responded to a report of a pickup truck that had crashed into the second story of a residence near Route 57 and Butler Park Road in Washington Township. Investigators determined Nunn had been driving while intoxicated.

Balog, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was killed in the crash. Terry, who was asleep inside the residence at the time, suffered serious injuries, authorities said.

The state was represented at trial by Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Brotzman and Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Dellera. Authorities also credited Detective Lisa Salerno, the Washington Township Police Department, the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the New Jersey State Police Laboratory for their roles in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
