Hunterdon County man killed in small plane crash at New York airport

SHAWANGUNK, N.Y. (Ulster County) — An 80-year-old Hunterdon County man was killed Saturday afternoon when his small plane crashed and caught fire while attempting to take off from Kobelt/Wallkill Airport in Shawangunk, state police said.

Troopers from the State Police Highland barracks responded to the crash at about 2:25 p.m. and found the pilot, identified as Gerald Cotter of Milford Borough, dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the single-engine aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration is assisting in the investigation. Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
