I-80 eastbound lane closures, ramp detours set Saturday night into Sunday in Mount Arlington for bridge project

MOUNT ARLINGTON, N.J. (Morris County) — I-80 eastbound in Mount Arlington is scheduled for lane closures and ramp detours Saturday night as work progresses on the Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, until 11 a.m. Sunday, June 15, I-80 eastbound will have lane closures from before the bridge over Howard Boulevard to near milepost 32. Work will start with a single lane closure, followed by a second lane closure. Construction will begin in the right lane and shift to the left as work advances. At least one lane will remain open overnight.

By 11 a.m. Sunday, traffic on I-80 eastbound will shift to the newly built eastbound bridge, using the right shoulder as a travel lane. This new alignment will remain in place until fall 2026 to allow for future work on I-80 westbound.

Additionally, from 10 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Sunday, the I-80 eastbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard and the Howard Boulevard southbound ramp to I-80 eastbound will be closed and detoured to support the traffic shift. If work is completed early, lanes and ramps will reopen sooner.

Detours will direct I-80 eastbound motorists seeking Exit 30 to continue to Exit 34 for Route 15, loop back via North Main Street and Route 15 southbound, then rejoin I-80 westbound to reach Howard Boulevard. Howard Boulevard southbound drivers will be directed to I-80 westbound, Exit 27A for Route 206 southbound, and then to I-80 eastbound.

The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace bridges in poor condition, improve safety, and enhance traffic flow. Planned upgrades include wider shoulders, longer acceleration and deceleration lanes, reconfigured ramps, new signals, and ADA-compliant sidewalks extending to Mount Arlington Train Station. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
