I-80 westbound truck rest area to close for three days in Morris County
ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Interstate 80 westbound Truck Rest Area in Roxbury Township will be closed for three days beginning Thursday morning as work continues on the I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The Truck Rest Area at milepost 32.3, just before Exit 30 for Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington, is scheduled to close at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, and remain closed until 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.
NJDOT said the closure is necessary to stage construction vehicles for steel beam installation on the I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard.
Trucks already in the rest area Thursday morning will not be required to leave when the closure begins at 9 a.m. However, trucks arriving after 9 a.m. will not be allowed to enter. The rest area could reopen sooner if the work is completed early.
The closure is part of a $65.4 million federally funded project to replace the I-80 eastbound and westbound bridges over Howard Boulevard, also known as County Route 516. The existing bridges are in poor condition.
The project includes raising the vertical clearance of both bridges, widening shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80 and widening ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will also be reconfigured.
Additional improvements include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, along with ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
