James McDonald Jr. sworn in as Phillipsburg police chief, succeeding retiring chief

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — James McDonald Jr. has been sworn in as the new police chief in Phillipsburg, succeeding Chief Anthony Goodell, who is retiring after more than 25 years in law enforcement.

Mayor Randy S. Piazza Jr. announced the appointment Wednesday, praising McDonald’s background and leadership.

“Congratulations to Chief James McDonald Jr. on his swearing in as the Chief of the Phillipsburg Police Department, NJ,” Piazza said in a statement. “James comes from a proud legacy of law enforcement, following in the footsteps of his father and mentor, James McDonald Sr., and carrying forward a tradition of service, discipline, and leadership. I am confident he will be one of the best chiefs our town has ever seen. I look forward to working together to continue strengthening public safety and serving the residents of Town of Phillipsburg.”

McDonald takes over after Goodell retired at the end of March. Goodell was appointed chief in 2025.

Before joining the Phillipsburg Police Department, Goodell served as an officer with the Pohatcong Police Department.

He follows former Chief Robert Stettner, who announced his retirement in 2024.
