JCP&L working to fix streetlight outages across N.J.; residents asked to help report issues
NEW JERSEY — As warmer evenings bring more residents outdoors, streetlights across New Jersey are playing a vital role in neighborhood safety and visibility. With more than 200,000 streetlights across its service area, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is prioritizing repairs and encouraging residents to report outages to help maintain well-lit and secure communities.
In 2024, JCP&L responded to more than 49,000 streetlight outages—an average of more than 130 per day. Many of these outages were the result of common issues like burned-out bulbs or minor fixture problems, though more complex cases, such as underground wiring failures, can take longer to resolve.
“Streetlights are safety tools, but they also provide an image of comfort in so many of our communities,” said Pat Mullin, JCP&L’s Vice President of Operations. “They let the public know that this is a place to be and a place you’re welcomed, especially in downtown areas.”
Christopher Hoenig, Senior Communication Representative with FirstEnergy, told RNJ that the utility is currently working to close out orders on approximately 1% of its streetlights across the state. While he noted that specific county-level data was unavailable, he emphasized that JCP&L crews are addressing outages daily.
“The vast majority of the work is completed in-house, though we will work with contractors when necessary,” Hoenig said. “We work very closely with our municipal partners, as they are often the ones who report the outages.”
Repair Timelines and Challenges
According to Hoenig, JCP&L aims to resolve outages as quickly as possible. Some lights can be fixed immediately upon inspection, but others require more time—especially when underground electrical work is involved. In some cases, access to the area can delay repairs.
“Access issues can also delay streetlight repairs, as our trucks need to be able to safely establish the work zone,” he added.
How to Report an Outage
Here are the best ways to report a streetlight outage:
- Call JCP&L at 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) and say “streetlight” after the greeting.
- Online using their “Streetlight or Outdoor Area Light Problem” form at firstenergycorp.com.
When reporting an outage, let JCP&L know:
- Your name and phone number (in case they need more information)
- Address where the streetlight is located (nearest house or business address and the nearest cross street)
- Number on the utility pole
- What is wrong with the streetlight (damaged pole; broken light fixture; light is off at night, on during the day, or flickers)
As summer continues, the company says it remains committed to keeping neighborhoods safe and illuminated.
“We appreciate the public’s help in identifying issues and allowing our crews to make timely repairs,” Mullin said. “Streetlights are a part of what makes our communities feel safe and welcoming.”
