JCP&L offers back-to-school energy saving tips for a cozy, efficient fall home

NEW JERSEY – As the vibrant colors of fall begin to pop up in neighborhoods and the sound of school buses fills the morning air, it’s clear that summer is giving way to a new season.

With the return of school days and cooler temperatures, there’s no better place than home to start using electricity wisely.

Simple low- and no-cost tips can help you make smart energy decisions, giving you greater control over your electric bill.

Here are tips from Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) to help you improve your family’s energy efficiency this season:

  • Unplug and Power Down: Between the rush of getting kids ready for school and managing household chores, it’s easy to forget about energy vampires, which are devices that continue to draw power even when turned off. Make it a habit to unplug chargers, small appliances and electronics, like gaming consoles, when they’re not in use. Consider using smart power strips that can cut off power to multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Seal the Leaks: Before the chill of winter sets in, take a moment to inspect your doors and windows for drafts. Unsealed gaps can allow heat to escape and cold air to enter. Applying weatherstripping and sealing any cracks can be a simple, cost-effective solution.
  •  Embrace Natural Light: With shorter daylight hours, it’s essential to make the most of natural light. Open curtains and blinds during the day to let in the sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting and heating.
  • Upgrade to LED Lighting: Consider switching to LED bulbs throughout your home. LED lighting consumes significantly less energy and lasts longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
  • Optimize Your Thermostat: Investing in a programmable thermostat can automatically lower the temperature when your family is away at school or work and increase it when everyone returns home. This simple change can result in energy savings.
  • Maintain Your Heating System: Before you rely heavily on your heating system, schedule a professional maintenance check. Clean filters, ducts and vents ensure that your system operates efficiently. Regular maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your heating equipment but can also lower your energy bills.
  • Layer Up for Warmth: Encourage family members to layer up with sweaters and blankets while indoors.
  • Cook Smart: Fall often brings cravings for hearty, warm meals. Choose cooking methods that use less energy, such as slow cookers, pressure cookers and microwave ovens, to save both time and electricity. When using your oven, prepare larger batches to maximize energy efficiency.
  • Family Commitment: Finally, make saving energy a family affair. Educate your children about the importance of energy conservation and involve them in your efforts. Create a fun challenge to see who can find the most ways to save energy around the house.

“As the seasons change, so can our daily habits. By incorporating these energy-saving tips into your fall routine, you’ll not only take control of your electric bill but also create a more sustainable and cozy home for your family,” said Michelle Henry, senior vice president of customer experience FirstEnergy.
