JCP&L urges customers to explore energy bill assistance programs

NEW JERSEY — Jersey Central Power & Light is encouraging customers to take advantage of available assistance programs as seasonal temperature swings drive higher energy use and rising electric bills.

The utility company’s reminder comes after the recent end of New Jersey’s Winter Termination Program, which protects certain customers from service shutoffs during colder months.

Doug Mokoid, president of FirstEnergy New Jersey, said fluctuating temperatures can lead to increased energy consumption and financial strain for some households.

“When temperatures swing to extremes like they did this winter, many customers use more energy to heat or cool their homes, which can lead to higher electric bills. No one should feel stressed about staying comfortable and safe at home. If you’re concerned about paying your electric bill, please reach out – our dedicated team is here to help you find options and get back on track.”

Among the available programs is the Universal Service Fund, which provides monthly bill credits to eligible households and may help eliminate past-due balances through its Fresh Start program.

To qualify, customers must meet income requirements and demonstrate that a portion of their annual income is spent on electricity costs.

Additional assistance programs include the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program, which provides direct payments to utility companies, and SHARES, which offers help to low- and moderate-income households to maintain or restore service.

Other options include the Payment Assistance for Gas & Electric program for customers with past-due balances, the 2-1-1 helpline for locating local resources, and Lifeline benefits for eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities.

JCP&L also offers the Comfort Partners Program, which provides free in-home energy evaluations and energy-saving improvements for qualifying customers.

Officials said customers can learn more about assistance options and apply for programs through the company’s website.
