Juvenile charged in Christmas Day burglary, vehicle theft in Morris County

CHATHAM BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — A juvenile has been arrested and charged in connection with a Christmas Day residential burglary and vehicle theft in Chatham Borough, police said on Monday.

According to Police Chief Brian K. Gibbons, officers responded Dec. 25, 2025, to a report of an occupied home burglary, during which keys to a BMW X7 were stolen and the vehicle was taken from the driveway. The vehicle was recovered the following day in Newark.

Following an investigation, detectives identified a juvenile suspect, who was taken into custody March 19, 2026.

The juvenile faces multiple charges, including second-degree residential burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit motor vehicle theft, third-degree burglary to a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal mischief, criminal trespass and credit card theft.

The suspect was released pending a future court appearance.

“I want to take a moment to personally express my sincere appreciation to the men and women of the Chatham Borough Police Department, especially our Detectives, for the extensive time, effort, and professionalism they dedicated to this investigation,” said Chief Gibbons. “Their diligence and persistence were instrumental in securing these charges and reflect the commitment our officers bring to protecting this community each and every day. While the juvenile was released pending a future court appearance, this investigation remains ongoing, and we will not rest until all individuals responsible for these actions are identified and held fully accountable.”

The investigation remains ongoing and involves the Chatham Borough Police Department Detective Bureau and the New Jersey State Police Auto Theft Task Force.
