Kevin McCallister’s ‘Home Alone 2’ hotel stay would cost over $8,000 in 2025
A new analysis by travel insurance comparison service iSelect estimates that Kevin McCallister’s iconic New York adventure from Home Alone 2 would cost more than four times as much in 2025 as it did in 1992 — and most of the expenses would not be covered by travel insurance.
Using pricing data from The Plaza Hotel, historic records and updated menu costs, iSelect found that Kevin’s one-night New York stay — including a suite at The Plaza and a hefty room-service bill — would jump from $2,109 in 1992 to $8,511 in 2025, a 303% increase.
The cost breakdown includes:
- Plaza Hotel suite: $1,100 in 1992 vs. $6,244 in 2025
- Room-service feast: $967.40 vs. $2,233.89
- Toy store donation: $23.75 vs. $9.06
- Ice cream sundae: $18 vs. $24
The totals do not include taxi fares or Kevin’s additional donation at Duncan’s Toy Chest.
What travel insurance would — and wouldn’t — cover
The analysis also examined how much of Kevin’s runaway spending spree would qualify for reimbursement under modern travel insurance policies. According to iSelect, almost none of it would.
Travel insurance might cover lost luggage — Kevin famously arrives in New York with only his father’s bag — and possibly emergency accommodation or reasonable meals if a traveler is delayed by airline issues. But iSelect said Kevin’s trip meets none of those criteria.
Luxury lodging, extravagant room service and charges made with a stolen credit card are specifically excluded from most policies.
“Unfortunately, a minor travelling alone without a parent or guardian’s knowledge would invalidate most travel insurance policies,” said Adrian Bennett, General Manager – General Insurance at iSelect. “In Kevin’s case, the lack of consent, the unauthorized use of a credit card, and the luxurious choices he made on his New York stay would not be covered. And remember, the best way to enjoy the holiday season is together, so make sure not to leave anyone behind… or home alone.”
Travel insurance tips for families
With heavy holiday travel expected, iSelect offered guidance for families packing up for the season:
- Ensure all children are properly listed on a family or group policy.
- Save boarding passes, baggage tags and receipts needed for claims.
- Review limits on luggage, electronics and accommodation.
- Understand that “reasonable expenses” exclude luxury hotels and high-end meals.
- Contact insurers before booking accommodation due to delays.
- Allow additional time at airports and travel hubs during peak periods.
According to iSelect, even with the most comprehensive policy, Kevin’s modern-day out-of-pocket total would remain close to $8,000.
