Kean secures $3.8 million for public safety, infrastructure projects in New Jersey’s 7th District

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Tom Kean Jr. announced Monday that he secured nearly $3.8 million in federal funding for local projects across New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District as part of a House-approved government spending bill.

Six of Kean’s fiscal year 2026 Community Project Funding requests were included in the funding measure, H.R. 6938, which passed the House on Jan. 8. The bill would direct $3,792,607 in federal funds to municipalities in the district if approved by the Senate.

“My top priority is delivering tangible results for families and communities across the Seventh District,” Kean said. “These projects represent meaningful, on-the-ground investments that will strengthen public safety, upgrade emergency communications, modernize critical infrastructure, and protect public health for years to come. I am pleased to bring this funding back home, and I am confident it will make a lasting difference in the lives of residents.”

The funding includes $835,000 for a communications upgrade for the Bernards Township Police Department, which plans to replace aging single-band radios with tri-band equipment to improve interoperability with neighboring agencies. Greenwich Township would receive $97,607 for a vehicle and equipment for its school resource officer, who serves approximately 630 students across two schools.

Warren Township is slated to receive $900,000 to modernize public safety communications equipment that officials say is more than two decades old. Mount Arlington would receive $560,000 for a stormwater improvement project at Memorial Pond, which plays a key role in managing runoff before it enters Lake Hopatcong.

In Sussex County, Sparta Township would receive $400,000 for pump station improvements aimed at protecting groundwater and reducing energy costs, while Hopatcong would receive $1 million to replace lead and galvanized steel water service lines as part of state-mandated infrastructure upgrades.

Kean said the projects were identified in collaboration with local officials and community leaders as part of the Community Project Funding process. He submitted 15 funding requests to the House Appropriations Committee in May 2025, six of which were included in the spending bill passed last week.

Another three projects were approved in November, when Kean announced $3.7 million for police departments in Byram, Readington and Holland townships. Additional funding requests remain under consideration in other appropriations bills pending in the House.
