Left lane of I-78 westbound to close Tuesday morning in Somerset County for overhead sign work

SOMERSET COUNTY, N.J. — The left lane on Interstate 78 westbound is scheduled to close Tuesday morning for overhead sign work as part of the ongoing I-78 westbound bridge deck replacement project in Bedminster and Bridgewater.

The lane closure will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, beginning near milepost 33.1, just past the Somerville Road Bridge, and continuing to milepost 32.1, just beyond the scenic overlook. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the work is necessary to complete priority overhead sign maintenance.

Motorists are advised to use caution and reduce speed through the work zone.

The lane closure is part of a $67 million federally funded project to replace the deteriorating eastbound and westbound bridge decks that carry I-78 over Routes 202/206 and Washington Valley Road. The project also includes resurfacing the roadway, upgrading guiderails, and constructing new approach slabs at all four bridges.

The work is designed to proceed in stages to minimize traffic disruptions, beginning with the eastbound bridge replacements. Construction on all bridges is expected to be completed by late spring 2026.

Variable message signs will notify drivers of upcoming traffic pattern changes. Work schedules may change due to weather or other factors.
