Hackettstown Police Department swears in new officer, honors officers at awards ceremony

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – The Hackettstown Police Department (HPD) held a special ceremony on Thursday, January 9, during the Town Council meeting, to swear in a new officer and recognize several members of the department.

Karl Lightner was sworn in as Hackettstown Police Department’s newest officer, and the department is thrilled to welcome him to the force.

The ceremony also honored several officers for their heroic actions and service throughout 2024:

  • Officer Alex DiCairano received the Medal of Honor for his bravery during an active shooter incident in Independence Township on June 27, 2024. DiCairano risked his life to help secure the scene and rescue a victim from a dangerous situation. The Medal of Honor is awarded for outstanding acts in the line of duty that involve substantial risk to life or limb.
  • Detective Juan Ocampo, who responded to the same active shooter situation in Independence Township, was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his selfless actions in ensuring the safety of others at the scene, despite the dangers involved.

  • Both Officer Alex DiCairano and Officer Brendan McGarry were honored with the Lifesaving Award for their heroic efforts on April 9, 2024, when they responded to a cardiac arrest call. Both officers performed CPR and used an AED to successfully revive the victim. The Lifesaving Award is given to officers who demonstrate an instinctual, heroic act that preserves human life, often at great personal risk.

  • Sergeant Marinelli was presented with the Chief’s Award for his exceptional leadership and contributions to the department throughout 2024. Marinelli played a key role in training new officers, including developing a new range program for firearms and tactical training. This award recognizes overall performance, dedication to the agency’s mission, and positive impact on the community and the department.

Jay Edwards

Born and raised in Northwest NJ, Jay has a degree in Communications and has had a life-long interest in local radio and various styles of music. Jay has held numerous jobs over the years such as stunt car driver, bartender, voice-over artist, traffic reporter (award winning), NY Yankee maintenance crewmember and peanut farm worker.
