Power strip sparks early morning fire in Roxbury Township, fire department warns of safety risk

ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Firefighters responded to a structure fire early Monday morning on the 100 block of West Circuit Drive in the Succasunna section of Roxbury Township, according to the Roxbury Township Fire Department.

The department said it was dispatched at 12:43 a.m. and crews quickly arrived on scene to locate the source of the blaze. A preliminary investigation revealed the fire started when a power strip—plugged into an outlet near combustible materials—overheated, igniting nearby papers and multiple other appliances and devices connected to the strip.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the area was safe, officials said.

Netcong Fire Department also responded to the initial dispatch as the Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC), and was released from the scene once the fire was extinguished and the structure was deemed secure.

The department shared a safety reminder in a social media post following the incident:

“Always be cautious about what you plug into power strips. Avoid overloading them, keep them away from flammable materials, and unplug them when not in use.”
