Man, 78, charged after suspected cocaine found following Morris County crash
FLORHAM PARK BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — A 78-year-old Parsippany-Troy Hills man was charged with multiple drug and motor vehicle offenses after police say he struck a street sign and was later found with suspected cocaine during a traffic stop in the early morning hours of June 3.
According to the Florham Park Police Department, an officer encountered a vehicle parked oddly in a closed business parking lot around 2:02 a.m. While speaking with the driver, the officer noticed damage to the vehicle. Another officer canvassing the area determined that the vehicle had struck a street sign in the center median at Columbia Turnpike and Hanover Road, knocking it down.
As the officer continued questioning the driver about fleeing the scene and his presence in the lot, he observed a small container of white powder suspected to be cocaine in the vehicle. A subsequent search turned up drug paraphernalia and 15 additional containers of suspected cocaine concealed in the driver’s clothing.
The man, who was not identified by name, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), possession of drug paraphernalia, and five motor vehicle offenses, including leaving the scene of an accident and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.
He was released on his own recognizance pending a court appearance in Morris County Superior Court.
