Man charged after police stop stolen vehicle in Clinton Township

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A 24-year-old Whitehouse Station man was arrested after police stopped a stolen vehicle on Route 31 North in Clinton Township last month, authorities said.

According to the Clinton Township Police Department, an officer on routine patrol on July 19 received an Automated License Plate Reader alert that a gray Mazda reported stolen was traveling northbound. The officer saw the vehicle speeding and conducted a traffic stop near Route 173.

The driver, identified as Felipe J. Gonzalez, exhibited signs of impairment and was found in possession of narcotics, police said. Gonzalez was taken into custody and transported to headquarters, where he underwent field sobriety tests and chemical testing. A Drug Recognition Expert determined he was impaired and unable to safely operate the vehicle, officials said.

Gonzalez was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property, theft by unlawful taking, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, being under the influence of CDS, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent and operating a stolen vehicle while in possession of CDS.

He was transported to the Hunterdon County Jail, and the owner of the Mazda recovered the vehicle, police said.
