Man charged with assault after victim struck with baseball bat in Hackettstown alleyway

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — Hackettstown police responded Friday evening to a report of an assault near High Class Barber Shop.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on May 23, officers arrived at the business located at 212 Main Street after a victim called 911 to report being struck in the head with a baseball bat, police said.

Officers found the victim suffering from a laceration to the rear of the head and provided medical aid at the scene. Hackettstown First Aid & Rescue Squad then transported the victim to Hackettstown Medical Center, police said.

An initial investigation revealed a verbal altercation had taken place between the victim and several individuals. During the dispute in the alleyway next to the business, the victim was struck with a metal baseball bat, police said.

Further investigation identified Miguel J. Ovalle-Matos, 30, of Wharton Borough, as the alleged suspect who struck the victim, police said.

Ovalle-Matos was charged with third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was held at Warren County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance.
