Man charged with DWI after erratic driving in Walmart parking lot in Morris County

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Newton man was charged with driving while intoxicated after police observed a pickup truck being driven erratically in a Walmart parking lot in Mount Olive Township.

Police said the incident occurred March 2 at about 3:16 p.m. when an officer on routine patrol noticed a Ford pickup truck driving erratically in the store’s parking lot.

The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop and identified the driver as Stephen W. Gibbs, 41, of Newton.

While speaking with Gibbs, police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of impairment, authorities said. Gibbs was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety tests.

Following the investigation, Gibbs was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Gibbs was later released to a sober driver pending a court hearing, police said.
