Man charged with DWI after his vehicle became disabled on Route 22 in Hunterdon County

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A Hunterdon County man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle became disabled along Route 22 last month in Clinton Township, police said.

Authorities said the incident occurred March 11 when a patrol sergeant observed a blue Nissan stopped on the shoulder of Route 22 West and pulled over to assist.

The driver, identified as Brian H. Cobel, 58, of Annandale, showed signs of impairment and was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, police said. The tests were not completed as directed, and Cobel was taken into custody.

He was transported to police headquarters for processing, where he was also evaluated by a drug recognition expert and provided a urine sample for testing, according to authorities. His vehicle was impounded.

Cobel was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving while suspended and use of drug paraphernalia.

He was later transported to the Hunterdon County Jail, police said.
