Man dies, 2 officers suffer smoke inhalation in Sussex County house fire

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – Two officers suffered smoke inhalation and a man is dead after a house fire in Sussex County early Monday morning.

The fire was reported at 12:29 a.m. at 303 Lakeside Avenue in Hopatcong Borough, according to police.

Upon first responder’s arrival, the home was already fully engulfed in flames with heavy smoke conditions, police said.

After extinguishing the fire, Robert Powers, 64, was found dead inside the home, police said.

Two police officers were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation and later released, police said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, police said.

The Hopatcong Police Department, Hopatcong Fire Department, Jefferson Fire Department, and Hopatcong EMS assisted at the scene.
