Man facing drug, DWI charges following traffic stop in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Morris County man is facing several charges including driving while intoxicated and drug possession following a traffic stop last week in Byram Township, according to police.

On Thursday, April 18, at 10:34 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle on Route 206 fail to maintain its lane, police said.

The officer then stopped the vehicle and while speaking to the driver, who was identified as Daniel B. Carlin, 27, of Randolph Township, the officer observed drug paraphernalia and felt he may be under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or drug, police said.

Carlin was asked to perform several standardized field sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed and was then arrest for driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or drug, police said.

Upon a search, Carlin was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia with suspected drug residue. During a search of the vehicle subsequent to arrest, officers located two bundles of suspected heroin and additional drug paraphernalia, police said.

Carlin was transported to the police station where he consented to breath tests. A warrant was then obtained to collect blood and urine. He was transported to Newton Medical Center to execute the warrant in a “medically acceptable manner,” police said.

Carlin was charged with third-degree possession of heroin, being under the influence of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while intoxicated, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to keep right, and failure to maintain lane. He was then released pending a court appearance, police said.
