UPDATE: Officials identify Morris County man who drowned in Delaware River
DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA – A 30-year-old Morris County man drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming in the Delaware River at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, authorities said.
Emergency crews were called around 4:10 p.m. to the Kittatinny Point picnic area after a report of a swimmer in distress, according to the National Park Service. Rangers, New Jersey State Police, and water rescue teams from the Portland (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Department responded and located the man in about 17 feet of water.
Officials said the victim, from Parsippany-Troy Hills, was swimming with family members and became tired while attempting to cross the river before going under. He was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the water. His name has not been released.
The National Park Service urged visitors to wear properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets while swimming, floating, fishing or boating on the Delaware River.
