Morris County man charged with forgery, bad checks after stolen check deposited, police say

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Morris County man was arrested after police said he stole and deposited a check taken from another person’s lost checkbook.

According to police, a victim reported on Sept. 5 that he had discovered fraudulent activity involving his checking account. The victim said he lost his checkbook in late August in the area of Route 46 in Budd Lake and later realized a check was missing and had been cashed for $200.

Following an investigation, police determined that Joshua Garfi, 35, of Budd Lake, allegedly took the missing check, filled it out, and deposited it into his bank account.

Garfi was taken into custody without incident on Sept. 30, police said. He was charged with forgery and issuing bad checks before being released pending a court hearing.
