Morris County woman dead, several injured in multi-vehicle crash on I-78 in Hillside Township

HILLSIDE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Union County) — A 21-year-old woman was killed and multiple people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 78 in Union County, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at 1:46 a.m. to the westbound local lanes near milepost 53.4 in Hillside Township, NJSP spokesman Charles Marchan said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Brandon Babb, 29, of Newark, was driving a Honda SUV west when he changed lanes and struck a Toyota SUV driven by Vanessa Jonas, 37, also of Newark. The collision redirected the Honda into the local roadway lanes facing east.

A Ford passenger car driven by Dayle Danchak, 24, of Towaco, with passenger Genna Spina, 21, of Denville Township, then struck the Honda. The Ford overturned in the express roadway at an angle and was struck by a Chevrolet SUV driven by Derek Feltenberger, 39, of Reading, Pennsylvania.

As a result, Spina was ejected from the Ford and sustained fatal injuries, police said. Danchak suffered serious injuries, Jonas sustained moderate injuries, and Feltenberger sustained moderate injuries. Babb was not injured.

Two passengers in the Chevrolet — an 11-year-old girl and Sondra Williams, 59, of Reading, Pennsylvania — suffered minor injuries.
