Morristown police launches free lock box program to help seniors, disabled residents in emergencies

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morristown Bureau of Police, in partnership with the Department of Senior Services, has launched Operation Blue Angel, a free safety program designed to assist seniors and medically disabled residents during emergencies.

The voluntary program provides participants with a secure lock box, installed near their front door, that contains a key to their home. The Morristown Police Department keeps the lock box’s access code confidential so emergency responders can enter the home quickly and safely without causing damage.

“This program offers added peace of mind and ensures timely assistance in critical situations,” the department said in a statement.

To qualify, residents must be at least 55 years old or have a medical condition that could lead to incapacitation, live alone or alone for extended periods, and complete an application and liability waiver. An emergency contact person must also be designated. The lock box remains property of the town and must be returned if the participant moves or leaves the program.

For more information or to apply, residents can contact the Morristown Police Community Engagement Unit at 973-292-6631 or email Heart@morristownpolice.org.
