Mount Olive Police Department launches MO CAP mental health co-response program

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – The Mount Olive Police Department Department has Launched the MO CAP mental health co-response program.

The MO CAP program is a mental health co-response initiative specifically for Mount Olive Township. The program allows Mount Olive Township police officers to collaborate with mental health professionals on scene to deescalate situations involving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis and assist community members struggling with mental health or substance use disorders. Mental health professionals also help connect individuals to appropriate services based on their immediate needs.

In 2023, the Mount Olive Police Department recognized the growing need for mental health support within the community and applied for the Connect and Protect: Law Enforcement Behavioral Health Response Program, offered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The township was one of two municipalities in New Jersey awarded $550,000 to implement the program.

The Mount Olive Police Department has partnered with mental health professionals from the Mental Health Association (MHA) to create the program. This initiative aims to ensure that community members receive the support they need during challenging times, right here in Mount Olive. The Mount Olive Police Department is committed to fostering a supportive and healthy community for all residents.
