Mount Olive police recognize dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Mount Olive Police Department is recognizing its communications officers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, observed April 12 through April 18, officials said.

The week honors dispatchers who serve as the critical link between the public and emergency responders, often working behind the scenes to manage emergency and non-emergency calls.

Operating from the communications center at police headquarters, Mount Olive’s communications officers provide 24/7 service year-round, handling everything from routine inquiries to life-threatening emergencies.

In 2025, dispatchers answered 8,315 emergency 911 calls and 37,930 administrative calls. They also coordinated responses to 3,843 fire and medical incidents while supporting police operations during more than 95,000 calls for service across the township, according to the department.

Officials said the department maintains accreditation as a Public Safety Answering Point through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, reflecting high operational standards.

Communications officers undergo extensive training before working independently, including certification in 911 telecommunications, emergency medical dispatch and CPR, along with more than 400 hours of hands-on instruction. Ongoing training is also required to keep pace with evolving public safety needs.

Police officials said the work of dispatchers is essential to ensuring timely and effective emergency response and expressed appreciation for their continued service to the community.
