Mount Olive police step up dirt bike enforcement, reward riders who follow law
MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Three dirt bikes were impounded and summonses were issued after Mount Olive Township police conducted a targeted enforcement operation in response to complaints about illegal dirt bike activity.
The Mount Olive Township Police Department said it has received numerous complaints since February about dirt bikes being operated unlawfully on township roads, with a high concentration of complaints coming from the Budd Lake section.
Members of the department’s Patrol, Traffic and Investigations divisions conducted the targeted enforcement operation Oct. 5.
Police said three people were found operating unregistered and uninsured dirt bikes on township roads. The dirt bikes were impounded and summonses were issued.
The department warned that people who operate dirt bikes unlawfully on public roads could face enforcement action, including having the bikes impounded and receiving summonses for operating unregistered or uninsured motor vehicles or operating without a license.
Police said riders who fail to stop for officers could also face possible criminal charges for eluding.
At the same time, the department has launched a Positive Ticket Program to recognize people who follow the law while operating e-bikes or dirt bikes.
Officers can issue positive tickets to people they observe lawfully operating an e-bike or dirt bike. The tickets currently include a gift card to Bubbakoo’s Burritos.
Police acknowledged that dirt bike enforcement requires department resources that could otherwise be used for other duties, but said reckless and careless riding often generates calls from concerned residents and officers have a responsibility to respond when violations are reported.
The department said each enforcement action may divert an officer from other duties or from assisting someone in need.
Police urged riders to operate responsibly, follow the law and help keep township roads safe, warning that enforcement action will be taken against those who operate unlawfully.
