Mount Olive police to conduct pedestrian safety enforcement in coming months
MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Mount Olive Township Police Department will conduct pedestrian safety enforcement details in the coming months as part of an effort to reduce accidents and educate the public.
Police said the initiative will focus on crosswalks throughout the township, with officers monitoring compliance by both drivers and pedestrians.
Under New Jersey law, motorists are required to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. The statute states that drivers must stop and remain stopped when a pedestrian is within a marked crosswalk and in the same lane or an adjacent lane of travel.
Despite the law, officials said pedestrian fatalities have been rising. In 2024, fatalities increased by 30%, marking the highest number in more than 35 years.
Police said the enforcement effort will emphasize education, aiming to inform residents and visitors about pedestrian rights and traffic laws to help prevent crashes involving pedestrians.
Officials said the department is committed to improving safety and encouraging compliance with traffic laws throughout the township.
