Murphy administration expands Electric Vehicle Tourism Corridor program
Corridor program supports charging infrastructure in prime business districts
NEW JERSEY – The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has announced a new expansion of the successful Electric Vehicle (EV) Tourism program focusing on heavily trafficked corridors where people travel to the State’s business, recreation, and leisure destinations.
“New Jersey is accelerating the buildout of EV infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of our state’s drivers,” said Governor Murphy. “We will continue to build a robust charging network in our state and the region to ensure easy access to public chargers, allowing people to charge up while enjoying one of New Jersey’s world-class tourist destinations.”
“The EV Tourism Corridor program is a new and exciting part of our whole-of-government effort to build out a robust electric vehicle charging network,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, President, NJBPU. “This smart and coordinated approach to EV charging helps strategically locate charging opportunities to consumer hotspots – the places where we all love to travel, conduct business, and recreate with our friends and family – all while supporting local economic development and giving those who choose to drive electric vehicles a reliable place to charge up.”
The EV Tourism program provides funding for chargers at tourist locations around the state, encouraging residents and out-of-state travelers to choose New Jersey to charge up and unwind at one of many destinations, whether downtown, at the shore, or at a historic site. Locations ranging from boardwalks, parks, and other unique attractions, as well as overnight lodging establishments can apply here.
EV Tourism Corridor provides incentives for DC Fast Chargers to businesses, hotels, government entities, and non-profits located within 1 mile of an eligible corridor. Hotels within 3 miles are also eligible to receive incentives for Level 2 chargers. This program is designed to increase the build-out of charging infrastructure at travel-centric sites along major corridors to help reduce range anxiety for EV travelers in the state.
Awards available under this program include:
- Up to $5,000 per Level 2 Charger (for hotels only)
- Up to $50,000 per DC Fast Charger
Charging sites in Overburdened Municipalities can qualify for a 50% bonus incentive – increasing the total award to up to $7,500 per Level 2 charger and up to $75,000 per DC Fast Charger. Qualifying routes include within required distances to a toll route, interstate route, U.S. highway, or State highway.
The EV Tourism Corridor Program will evaluate applications on a rolling basis and build upon the competitive EV Tourism Program, which has already awarded 70 grants for over $7.3 million in incentives since the program began accepting applications in fiscal year 2022. These grants have awarded incentives for a total of 236 Level 2 and 88 DC Fast Chargers to tourism sites across New Jersey.
