New Jersey ranks highest in real estate property taxes, WalletHub study finds
NEW JERSEY — New Jersey residents face the highest real estate property tax burden in the nation, according to WalletHub’s 2026 Property Taxes by State report.
The personal finance company found that New Jersey ranks 51st overall for real estate property taxes — indicating the highest burden when compared with other states and the District of Columbia. By contrast, the state ranks first, or lowest, for vehicle property taxes because it does not impose a vehicle property tax.
Each year, the average U.S. household pays $3,119 in real estate property taxes, according to WalletHub. In the 26 states that levy vehicle property taxes, residents pay an additional average of $499.
In New Jersey, the real estate property tax on the median state home value is $9,590, compared with $7,022 on the median U.S. home value, the report said. The vehicle property tax on the nation’s best-selling car is $0 in New Jersey.
To compile the rankings, WalletHub compared home and vehicle property taxes nationwide and analyzed the data relative to each state’s median home value.
