New Jersey’s Free Fishing Day set for Oct. 18

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife will host the state’s fall Free Fishing Day on Saturday, Oct. 18, giving residents of all ages the chance to fish New Jersey’s public waters without a license or trout stamp.

The fall Free Fishing Day coincides with the state’s autumn trout stocking, allowing anglers to take advantage of prime fishing conditions across New Jersey’s lakes, rivers, and streams. While fishing licenses and trout stamps are not required on this day, all size and daily catch limits remain in effect.

Free Fishing Days are designed to introduce residents to freshwater fishing at no cost and encourage families to enjoy the outdoors together. Although children under 16 can always fish without a license, these days give adults the same opportunity — a “no-risk” chance to try out the sport before purchasing a license.

New Jersey’s fish populations have never been stronger, thanks in part to the Hackettstown and Pequest State Fish Hatcheries, which stock species such as muskellunge, northern pike, walleye, striped bass hybrids, channel catfish, and lake trout. In addition, anglers can find thriving wild populations of fish throughout the state’s waterways.

For beginners, the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center in Oxford, Warren County, offers free fishing programs, nature exhibits, picnic areas, and accessible fishing along the Pequest River.

Many local organizations, including townships, service clubs, and sportsmen’s groups, also plan children’s fishing derbies to coincide with Free Fishing Day. These events are typically open to youth up to age 16.
