Newton issues warning after reports of sick fox

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Animal control officers in Newton are cautioning residents after receiving reports of a fox that appears to be sick in the area of Memory Park, Mill Street and Hillside Terrace.

Authorities urged the public not to approach or attempt to handle the animal and to keep children and pets away. Residents who see the fox or notice other wildlife behaving unusually are asked to contact Newton Animal Control at 973-383-2525.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Game has been notified of the sightings, officials said.

“Wildlife can carry illnesses that pose risks to both people and pets,” animal control officers said in a statement. “Our team is actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents and the well-being of the animal.”
