NJ Transit celebrates USS New Jersey commissioning with week of complimentary rides for military

NJ TRANSIT Thanks Military With Free Transportation During Commissioning Week Events Sept. 9-14

NEW JERSEY — NJ TRANSIT is honoring the brave men and women who are serving in the United States Armed Forces, retirees, and veterans with complimentary system-wide rides to celebrate the commissioning of the USS New Jersey (SSN 796), the U.S. Navy’s newest fast-attack submarine.

Official commissioning ceremonies are scheduled for Sept. 13-14 at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck.

Now through the Commissioning on Saturday, Sept. 14, active-duty, reserve, retired, and veteran members of the military and National Guard and their dependents ride for free on NJ TRANSIT while in uniform or by displaying a Military ID.

To take advantage of this offer, simply board any NJ TRANSIT bus or train in your military uniform or show your Military ID to the operator or conductor. No ticket or fare is required. “The commissioning of the Navy’s latest fast attack submarine, USS NEW JERSEY, at Naval Weapons Station Earle continues the Navy’s long legacy in our state.  As she prepares to take on new missions, NJ TRANSIT is pleased to offer free travel to military personnel,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “This week-long initiative reflects our deep appreciation for the service and sacrifices made by those who protect our nation.”

Throughout the rest of the year, active-duty, reserve, National Guard, military dependents, and retired military personnel can take advantage of discounted travel on NJ TRANSIT upon presenting their valid military or military-dependent ID cards.

Veterans with service-connected disabilities may present a valid Veterans Affairs (VA) identification card which indicates “service connected” to use the one-way reduced ticket option. When purchasing a ticket from a ticket vending machine or through the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, simply select Senior/Disabled to obtain the discounted fare. Tickets may also be purchased at ticket offices at stations.
