NJ Transit initiates refund policy for unused one-way tickets purchased prior to June 1, 2024

NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit announced Wednesday that refunds will be made available for unused one-way bus, rail and light rail tickets purchased prior to June 1.

This refund policy will also apply to rail 10-trip tickets, which are the equivalent of 10 one-way rail tickets purchased in a single transaction.

Beginning Aug. 1, 2024 and continuing through Dec. 31, 2024, customers can use the methods below to request a refund on any unused one-way or rail 10-trip tickets purchased prior to June 1, 2024.

Tickets purchased on, or after, June 1, 2024 must be used by July 31, 2024 and will not be eligible for refunds.

NJ Transit continues to strongly urge customers to avoid purchasing any additional one-way tickets that they cannot use by July 31, 2024. While the overwhelming majority of customers do not typically purchase more than three months’ worth of one-way tickets in advance, the refund policy will help assist those customers who might be at risk of having tickets expire before they can be used by July 31.

Beginning July 1, 2024, all one-way tickets, including rail ten-trip tickets, will be valid for 30 days, including the date of purchase. Ticket expiration policies are consistent with transit industry best practices across the country. The move is expected to significantly reduce the opportunity for fraud, while saving NJ Transit an estimated $25 million annually.

The new one-way ticket policy was first announced as part of NJ Transit’s fare adjustment proposal on January 24, 2024, and subsequently approved by NJ Transit’s Board of Directors at the April board meeting. On May 1, 2024, NJ Trasnit widely communicated this reminder and extended the validity period of all one-way tickets purchased prior to July 1 to July 31 – giving customers a full three months to use any tickets in their possession before they expire.

NJ Transit remains committed to ensuring customers are made whole for any unused one-way or rail ten-trip tickets in their possession that were purchased prior to June 1, 2024.

How to Request a Refund

  • Paper Tickets:  Customers should bring unused paper tickets purchased prior to June 1, 2024 to a customer service office (locations and hours listed below). Customers will need to provide contact information and should have their receipts with them in order to expedite the refund process. For customers who don’t have their receipt, you will be asked to provide contact information and the last four digits of the credit card used for the purchase to have the money refunded to the credit card. Refunds will take longer to process for those customers who have no receipt or other transaction information. Customer service staff will document the number and type of tickets received and forward them to NJ TRANSIT’s Refund Department for verification and processing before issuing the appropriate refund.  Refund processing is expected to take approximately three to four weeks.
  • Web Tickets: Customers should print out unused one-way tickets purchased on the web prior to June 1, 2024 and follow the above instructions for printed tickets.
  • Mobile App Tickets:  All unused Mobile App tickets purchased prior to June 1, 2024 that remain unused on August 1, 2024 will be automatically converted to a credit in the amount of the unused one-way tickets in the customer’s electronic wallet in the Mobile App.  Customers do not need to take any action to receive this credit.
  • Important Note:  Refund requests for unused one-way tickets, and rail 10-trip tickets, will not be accepted for processing prior to August 1, 2024.  These tickets will remain valid through July 31, 2024 and customers are strongly encouraged to use any tickets they may have in their possession before that date. We will be accepting refund requests from August 1 – December 31, 2024.
