NJDOT lowers highway speed limit to 35 mph statewide amid winter storm

UPDATE: New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced the Emergency Traffic Regulation Order that temporarily lowered all posted speed limits to 35 miles per hour will be lifted effective at 5 p.m. today, Monday, Feb. 23, for all highways.

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Department of Transportation has issued an emergency order temporarily lowering speed limits to 35 mph on all Interstate and State highways beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday in anticipation of a severe winter storm.

The order, signed by NJDOT Acting Commissioner Priya Jain, applies to all Interstate highways, U.S. and State highways, as well as the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway.

The emergency traffic regulation reduces any posted speed limit above 35 mph to 35 mph until further notice. Highways already posted at 35 mph or lower will not be affected.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill has declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm, which is forecast to bring heavy snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions Sunday and Monday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions statewide.

NJDOT said the speed reduction is being implemented out of an abundance of caution to improve safety as conditions deteriorate.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel Sunday and Monday and to use extreme caution if travel is required.
