Non-permitted campfire gets out of control, sparks brush fire in Hunterdon County

BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A brush fire that broke out Friday afternoon in Bethlehem Township was caused by a non-permitted campfire that got out of control, according to a post from the Hampton Fire Company.

Fire crews from the Hampton Fire Company and Glen Gardner Fire Department were dispatched to Hillside Terrace in Bethlehem Township for a working brush fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a fast-moving fire in a wooded area spreading toward a nearby residence. Firefighters were able to get ahead of the flames and stop the progression before it posed an immediate threat to homes.

An investigation determined the fire started after a non-permitted campfire got out of control, officials said.

“This incident is a very important reminder to obtain your free campfire permit through the NJFFS so they can ensure the area you are burning in is safe and that burning is permitted that day (depending on weather conditions),” officials said in the Facebook post.

Pattenburg Fire Department, High Bridge Fire Department, Lebanon Township Fire Department, New Jersey Forest Fire Service, New Jersey State Police, and South Branch EMS also assisted at the scene.
