Officials identify Morris County man who drowned in Delaware River
DELAWARE WATER GAP NATIONAL RECREATION AREA – Officials have identified the man who drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming in the Delaware River as 30-year-old Fausto Berrezueta Morquecho of Parsippany-Troy Hills.
Emergency crews were called around 4:10 p.m. to the Kittatinny Point picnic area after a report of a swimmer in distress, according to the National Park Service. Rangers, New Jersey State Police and water rescue teams from the Portland (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Department responded and found Morquecho in about 17 feet of water.
Authorities said he was swimming with family members and became tired while attempting to cross the river before going under. He was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the water.
The National Park Service reminded visitors to wear properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets while swimming, floating, fishing or boating on the Delaware River.
