Overnight lane closures scheduled Friday on I-80 eastbound in Mount Arlington
MOUNT ARLINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 80 eastbound in Mount Arlington should expect overnight lane closures Friday as construction continues on the $65.4 million project to replace the bridges over Howard Boulevard, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, a single eastbound lane will be closed between mileposts 29.8 and 32.3. A second lane is scheduled to close at 11 p.m., with at least one lane remaining open to traffic throughout the night.
NJDOT said construction is expected to begin in the right lane and move toward the left as work progresses. The closures are necessary to shift traffic and establish a work zone in the median for upcoming improvements.
All eastbound lanes are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Once the work is completed, traffic will be shifted to the right, toward the right shoulder, allowing crews to continue construction in the median. The new traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through December 2026.
The federally funded project will replace the existing I-80 eastbound and westbound bridges over Howard Boulevard, also known as County Route 516, which NJDOT said are in poor condition.
Planned improvements include increasing the vertical clearance beneath both bridges, widening shoulders, extending acceleration and deceleration lanes along I-80, and widening the ramps connecting the highway to Howard Boulevard. The intersection at Howard Boulevard will also be reconfigured to improve traffic operations.
Additional work includes upgraded traffic signals and lighting, along with sidewalks and crosswalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Sidewalks will also be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and accessibility.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
NJDOT said the timing of the lane closures may change depending on weather conditions or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to visit 511nj.org for construction updates and real-time traffic information.
