Phillipsburg appoints Captain Anthony Goodell as new chief of police

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – Phillipsburg has announced the appointment of Captain Anthony Goodell as the new Chief of Police for the Phillipsburg Police Department.

Goodell’s appointment comes after Captain James McDonald served as Interim Chief of Police at the beginning of 2025, awaiting the results of the New Jersey Civil Service Chief of Police Exam. Goodell, a United States Army veteran, achieved the highest overall score on the exam and has chosen to accept the prestigious role of Chief.

Town officials expressed pride in having multiple highly qualified candidates, including Captain McDonald, who share a unified vision for the future of public safety, noting the leadership and teamwork demonstrated during a public safety event on Monday, February 24th, which underscored the department’s commitment to the community’s safety and security.

“Public safety remains the top priority for the Town of Phillipsburg, and under Chief Goodell’s leadership, the community can expect continued improvements in law enforcement services and public safety initiative,” town officials said.
