Police warn of rise in vehicle thefts in Washington Township, Warren County

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) – The Washington Township Police Department is warning residents about a recent uptick in motor vehicle thefts, a trend that mirrors similar incidents across New Jersey and neighboring areas.

According to police, many of the thefts involve juveniles targeting unlocked vehicles, often with keys left inside. Officials describe the thefts as crimes of opportunity and are urging residents to take simple but crucial steps to protect their property.

“This troubling trend is not isolated to our community,” police said in a statement. “It is part of a larger issue affecting towns and cities across the state and surrounding areas.”

Authorities are encouraging residents to:

  • Lock vehicles at all times.
  • Remove valuables from inside.
  • Take keys indoors and avoid leaving them in or near the vehicle.
  • Make sure home security cameras are operational.
  • Report suspicious activity to the Washington Township Police Department immediately.

Police say increased awareness and basic preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of theft. Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact the department at 908-689-1630.
