Red Cross urges blood donations in April, offers incentives for donors

NEW JERSEY — The American Red Cross is encouraging residents to donate blood or platelets this month to help maintain a stable supply for patients, while offering limited-time incentives for donors.

Officials said the need for blood remains constant, and donations in April can help ensure hospitals are adequately supplied in the weeks ahead.

The campaign coincides with National Volunteer Month, recognizing the role of volunteer donors and those who support blood drives.

Those who donate by April 12 will receive a Red Cross x Life is Good T-shirt while supplies last. Donors who give between April 13 and April 30 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a participating merchant.

The Red Cross said there is no substitute for blood, and donations are essential for patient care. Officials are encouraging both regular donors and first-time participants to schedule an appointment.

Eligible donors must generally be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental consent where permitted, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional requirements apply for younger donors.

Appointments can be scheduled through RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Donors can also complete pre-donation health screening online using RapidPass to save time at their appointment.
