Powerball to expand to UK this summer, jackpots expected to grow faster

The Powerball jackpot is set to expand internationally this summer, allowing players in the United Kingdom to participate in the same jackpot as players in the United States.

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which represents 39 U.S. lotteries, announced an agreement with Allwyn UK, the operator of The UK National Lottery, marking the first time a non-U.S. lottery will join the Powerball jackpot pool.

With the addition of UK players, officials said the number of participating lotteries will increase, helping jackpots grow more quickly due to a larger player base. Core features for U.S. players, including the $2 ticket price and odds of winning, will remain unchanged.

“This partnership expands the player base in a way that benefits every jurisdiction participating in Powerball,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. “This is a win for Powerball players – as more people play, the faster jackpots grow, all while keeping odds the same for every Powerball drawing, wherever a player buys their $2 ticket.”

The expansion is also aimed at strengthening long-term funding for public programs supported by lottery proceeds. Officials said more than half of each ticket sold remains in the jurisdiction where it is purchased, contributing to initiatives such as education, veteran services and community programs.

“For decades, Powerball proceeds have provided real benefits to Americans, year after year. This will not change,” Strawn noted. “This summer’s expansion to the UK helps secure the game’s future as a dependable source of funding for the public programs and services our players care about.”

UK officials said the addition of Powerball aligns with efforts to bring new opportunities to players.

“We’re delighted to be joining the Powerball community. Our ambition is to bring more games, more innovation and more excitement to The UK National Lottery – and it doesn’t get more exciting than Powerball, with its transformative jackpots and life-changing contribution to good causes,” said Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK.

Officials said the partnership will apply only to the Powerball jackpot, with lower-tier prizes remaining separate. Players in the United States will continue to play the game the same way, with no changes to draw times, ticket prices or odds.

The UK National Lottery is expected to join Powerball drawings later this summer, pending final regulatory approval.
