Project Self-Sufficiency seeks garden volunteers to help feed local families

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Project Self-Sufficiency is seeking volunteers to assist with planting, maintaining, and harvesting fruits and vegetables from the community gardens at its Newton campus.

Volunteers will work alongside experienced horticultural professionals Monday through Friday. No experience is required, though volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Hours are flexible.

The Newton campus is home to numerous vegetable gardens that yield produce for the agency’s low-income participants. In the summer, potted tomato plants line the sidewalks of the five-acre property. Fresh produce is harvested daily and distributed to agency clients, often accompanied by tips on cooking and nutrition.

Children attending the agency’s Little Sprouts Early Learning Center also participate in the harvest, gaining hands-on experience while learning about healthy eating habits.

“Fresh, nutritious food is of paramount importance for all families,” said Project Self-Sufficiency Executive Director Deborah Berry-Toon. “The community gardens at Project Self-Sufficiency are a living example of the love our volunteers have for gardening—and their dedication to our mission of ensuring vulnerable community members have access to healthy produce.”
